The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, has expressed deep appreciation the state Government and journalists for their show of solidarity and support towards the unconditional release of Mary Ekere.

Mary Ekere was arrested and arraigned in the sanitation court by officials of the Akwa Ibom Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency while discharging her legitimate duties on Monday, September 16, 2019.

The council in a press statement signed by the Chairman and Secretary, Mr. Amon Etuk and Dominic Akpan, also thanked, in a special way, the National President of the Union, Mr. Chris Isiguzo and variois organizations in the state and across Nigeria for their calls and support over the incidence.

The chairman assured all members that the council will never abandon any of her members threatened or attacked in the line of duty.

“We state emphatically that the union shall not tolerate any form of abuse of constitutional rights of journalists from any quarter in the performance of their duties. It could be anybody, tomorrow,” the statement said.
