At the beginning of every year, people make resolutions whether consciously or unconsciously. The aim is to do better and set goals for the New Year. One common resolution that appears on every list is ‘I want to lose weight’ or ‘I want to be fit’.

This year, we suggest that you do not make fitness the priority. Try others things that can give your life a new positive direction and have fun doing it.

LIMIT YOUR PHONE TIME

Our phones have become an extension of our hands. While some people work on their phones or need it to facilitate part of their work, half the time work isn’t what keeps you on your phone. This year you can make the resolution to drop your phone and have actual face to face conversations. For a device that is meant to connect people, it has definitely disconnected most people. Decide to use your phone sparingly this year and actually connect to the people that you can see. Rediscover the joy of actual conversations.

REMEMBER YOUR MANNERS

Being manner less aka ‘being savage’ especially on Social Media has been steadily on the rise. This year, you can decide to go back to the days where people had manners and acted accordingly. Show respect to others offline and online regardless of how they treat you. You will finish out the year a better person if you make this one of your goals.

LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE

This is for the people that are more ambitious than most. Decide to learn a new language. It could be a local or foreign language. YouTube can be a very reliable source if you want to learn a foreign language. This can even add to your skills when seeking for employment in certain establishments or you can just have the pleasure of knowing you know one more language. Either way, it’s a win-win for you.

CLEAN YOUR SHOES

Your personal grooming this year shouldn’t end with just making sure your clothes are clean and pressed. Take care to be sure whatever footwear you have on reflects that cleanliness as well. This is an aspect of grooming that most people tend to ignore. Make this a goal in 2019 so you won’t be found wanting.

READ MORE BOOKS

The reading culture is always in need of a boost. Make reading more a goal this year. How many books did you read last year? Increase that number. Are you among those who didn’t even crack open a book? Decide to change that this year. Whether you are reading for pleasure or reading self help books, reading can always broaden your knowledge and vocabulary.

LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

This year if you are used to ‘playing it safe’, try and leave your comfort zone. As long as it is within reason do things that you won’t usually do so as to learn something new. Try something new and different. It can start with little things like ordering that dish you’ve not had the courage to order, to big things like applying for a job that is outside your established field. There are always new things to learn and only in leaving the known will you learn them.

VISIT NEW PLACES

If you have the resources to travel, try visiting somewhere new this year. Don’t go to the usual places. Travel to new places you haven’t been to before. Go on a safari in Tanzania; Visit the Favelas in Brazil or the Souks in Marrakesh. See it as ‘conquering’ new grounds. Make your trips more about experiencing new cultures and learning than shopping.

BE MORE CHARITABLE

Make giving a theme to adopt this year. It doesn’t have to b e money; you can give your time, talents, etc to others. Decide to be more ‘others serving’ than self serving this year. It is more blessed to give than to receive.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

While you strive to give more of yourself to others, find a balance and take care of yourself as well. Many people are so used to giving all to others and neglecting themselves. This year make yourself a priority. Take care of your health better as well.

LIMIT YOUR DRINKING

Do you over indulge just a little bit of the bottle? This year, change that. There is a lot to be gained by reducing your alcohol intake. You can still have a good time without over indulging. The measure of a good time you had should not be measured by how much you can’t remember your actions of the day before.

SAVE MONEY

Take care of your finances this year. Save more and stick to it all year round. If you are diligent, you will be amazed at how far you will go by year’s end.

NETWORK INTENTIONALLY

Decide to actively cultivate more work and business relationships this year. Sometimes, networking can get lost in the day to day grind of life. Make it a goal this year. You can never go wrong with intentionally networking with those within and outside your field.

GET A SIDE HUSTLE

The importance of this cannot be over stressed. With the economy of Nigeria, a side hustle is a NECESSITY. As long as it won’t interfere with your work, find a side-hustle this year that will ensure you end the year in a better place financially.

These are just a few ideas of goals/resolutions you can make to ensure you have a phenomenal 2019. Be sure to write down your goals where you can see it daily as that will you keep them in mind always. You can also share your goals with a friend that can be an accountability partner. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
