The nationwide strike embarked upon by the Joint Action Committee of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU; Non Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, and National Association of Academic Technologist, NAAT, may soon be called off.
This indication was given as the unions and the federal government reached an agreement at the end of a meeting ended Thursday morning.
Samson Ugwoke, the National President of the Joint Action Committee who spoke on the outcome of the meeting said a pronouncement would soon be made.
His words: “The three page agreement was signed and endorsed by all of us…
“We are taking our document and we will make our pronouncement soon.”
Speaking in the same vein, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, stated: “We all agreed that the JAC will consult its organ with a view to call off the strike as soon as possible.”
Rising from a Joint Action Committee meeting of non-teaching unions penultimate Wednesday in Abuja, the leadership directed its members to commence a nationwide strike on Monday, September 11.
The strike was to make the government pay their earned allowances, as well as a review the universities governance system.
Ugwoke said the strike would be “total and comprehensive”.
