N30, 000 minimum wage too small – Dogara

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has said the N30, 000 demanded by organised labour was not enough given the economic realities of the country.

Dogara made the comments on Monday at the public hearing on the minimum wage bill.

He argued that workers deserved a living wage rather than a minimum wage stressing that was the only way to curb corruption in the country.

“While we’re not oblivious of the economic situation in the country, we are saying that the N30,000 being demanded by the organised labour union is still not enough for the minimum wage.

“We should be paying our workers living wage not minimum wage,” he said.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had last Wednesday transmitted the National Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly proposing N27, 000 as approved by the National Council of States.

Labour is however, insisting on N30, 000.
