An Upper Area Court III in Jos has sentenced a motorist, Ibrahim Yale, 40, to three months’ imprisonment with an option of N6,000 fine for reckless driving and knocking down two school children.
The presiding Judge, Malam Mohammed Yahaya, convicted the defendant after his arraignment on a three-count charge of the lack of road worthiness certificate and reckless driving.
The Police Prosecutor, Ibrahim Gukwat, told the court that the defendant had no current certificate of road worthiness in addition to dangerous and reckless driving.
He said the defendant was arrested along Tafawa Balewa Street Jos, after the incident.
Gukwat further informed the court that the two victims were receiving treatment, adding that the defendant had settled their hospital bills.
The prosecutor said that the offence was contrary to sections 18 (1) and 58 (2) of Road Traffic Regulations (RTR) as well as Section 22 of Road Traffic Law (RTL) of the state .
The accused pleaded guilty to all the charges and pleaded for leniency.
“I know my conduct is unacceptable; please have mercy on me; I promise to be more careful in driving
next time”, the defendant pleaded.
