Local Govt. Staff Commits Suicide In Benue Over Unpaid Allowances

A staff of Gwer East local government area, identified as Aondona Yaga, has committed suicide.

Yaga died after he set himself ablaze in is house in Aliade.

Our correspondent gathered that Aondona worked as a casual staff at the Gwer local government secretariat, Aliade before his death.

His grandmother explained that life became very miserable for Aondona who had not been paid his little allowance as casual staff for close to three years.

He took ill and kept looking for money to treat himself until he decided there was no need to live anymore.

He therefore entered his room and set it on fire.

Information Officer of Gwer Local Government, Mr. Chris Avi confirmed the news of Aondona’s death and status as staff of the local government without further details.

At the time of writing this report, on Wedneaday, his corpse was still abandoned in front of his burnt thatch hut in Aliade with his grandmother watching helplessly.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Catherine Anene confirmed it.

She said the incident took place at about 8a.m on Tuesday adding that the police is investigating to get to the root of the matter.
