He was held with his wife in December 2015 by the federal government following confrontation between his followers and the Nigerian Army in Kaduna.

The attack was against the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.

There had been court orders for his release, but the government had insisted that he was in “protective custody.”

A number of protests have been staged by his followers in Abuja for his release to no avail.

The protests have led to deaths.
