Some students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria have been kidnapped along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.
There are disparities in the actual number of students kidnapped.
While the Kaduna state government said eight students were kidnapped, the report of the incident on the university’s Facebook page put the number at between 12 and 17.
The incident which reportedly occurred at the early hours of Sunday involved 300 Level students of the Department of French on their way to Lagos for the language immersion programme at the Nigeria French Language Village (NFLV) in Badagry.
The Abusite report quoted Precious Owunna, a student of French at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who is also at the Nigeria French Language Village in Badagry, as confirm the news, and saying one of the students was shot while trying to escape, while another woman was left behind because of her baby.

She wrote on her Twitter page: “Am a UNN student also running my program in Badagry, We got information that some of our student colleagues from ABU Zaria were kidnapped, around 17 of them. Someone tried to escape and was shot. The wounded person and a woman with a baby were left behind by the kidnappers.”
Students of the department gave the victims to include Okafor Grace, Kyenpia Bulus, Dickson Afolabi, Jemimah Badmus, Aliyu. S. Adamu, Simnom Praise, Ziya Asoji, Elizabeth John, Victor Agbo, and Precious Mutum.

Also, the Kaduna State Government on Monday confirmed that students of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, were among several people kidnapped along Kaduna-Abuja Expressway on Sunday.
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, in a statement, said that the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Kabiru Bala, informed the state government of the incident.
“The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Kabir Bala, has informed the government that eight students of the institution were among those kidnapped on Sunday on the Kaduna-Abuja road,” he said.
Police sources equally confirmed that the ABU vice-chancellor has formally reported the abduction of the students at the area command of the police in Zaria
