There is no greatness where there is no simplicity, goodness and truth –Leo Tolstoy

The above quote by the great Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy, aptly captures the embodiment called Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio.

Moment Tinubu Was Nearly Attacked In Kaduna

When on June 9, 1971, a baby girl was born to the family of late Godwin and Beatrice Nkemdilim Ejike, both of Ozom Aguobu – Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, unknown to many, a simple, humble, compassionate woman, destined to be a blessing to many, had touched mother earth.

This was to manifest when that baby grew up and became Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, wife of former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Obot Akpabio, who is now the Minority Leader in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Even while she was growing up, she was passionate about rendering kind assistance to the needy both young and old wherever she found herself.

Her desire and ambition to change lives positively got a notch higher when she got married to an equally compassionate gentleman.

As the First Lady of the state, she changed the narrative of women empowerment and defined compassion with human face by using her position to enrich lives of so many people especially the vulnerable group, women and children.

With a passion and mission to empower women, alleviate poverty, encourage youths who are disillusioned and give the disabled a sense of belonging, she truly transformed lives.

Through her pet project, the Family Life Enhancement Initiative, a not-for-profit organisation, Mrs. Akpabio empowered women, youths and children, and pointed them in the right direction to live meaningful and responsible lives. Majority of them will never forget her contributions to their lives.

As the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, she gave her time, energy and resources to the poorest of poor and otherwise excluded groups in the state. She worked tirelessly so much that by the time her husband’s tenure expired in 2015, she had without mincing words, secured a place in the hall of fame.

She was a mother to the motherless, provided homes for the homeless, paid bills for indigent sick people, ministered to the needs of the imprisoned and physically challenged.

The Good Book, in Matthew 25:35-36, says: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me…” Yes, these Mrs. Akpabio did as First Lady and her reward is assured.

She was and has remained the strong pillar of support behind the soaring political profile of her husband whose campaigns she planned, mobilised, and led successfully.

The outpouring of love as she marks her birthday is a confirmation that she truly fits the definition of greatness from the eyes of Tolstoy.

Happy birthday ma’am. May your years be long and fulfilled.
