Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, former governor of Anambra State, has said that the failure of the Federal Government in curbing insecurity in the country is comprehensive.

Ezeife said it was disturbing the level to which security lapses had reached in the country, stressing that security in Nigeria had taken several steps backwards.

He maintained that the action of the government relating to security in the country was such that nobody knew what it was doing any more, and people seemed to have lost hope.

The former governor, who spoke on Thursday in Lagos, expressed worries over the comment credited to former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia.

He said it was more disturbing when Mailafia talked about some of the future plans of Boko Haram in the country.

Asked if elder statesmen like him were not concerned about the state of nation, especially the high level of insecurity, he said, “You don’t have to be an elder statesman to know that there is a problem, or be concerned about the state of insecurity.

“The government may be working, or so they think. But their contribution is not good enough. The failure of government is comprehensive. Our dwindling security has been taken many steps backwards. Nobody seems to know what the government is doing any more.”

He stressed that a situation where citizens did not seem to understand what the military was doing had become more worrisome.

He maintained that it was even worse when the military said they had decimated Boko Haram, while the activities of the terrorists were still seen everywhere in the North-East.

“We are in a very difficult situation at the moment. If the Northern Governors Forum has called for an investigation of the weighty statement by Mailafia, that will be a good idea. Everyone should be concerned about the state of insecurity in the country,” he said.
