David Okwara, popularly known as Davies Ramsy is a Lagos-based masseur and an aspiring Nollywood actor. In this interview with YUSUF MOHAMMED, he talks about how he overcomes temptations from the opposite sex while doing his job.
TNE: Where are you from?
I am from Abia State. I didn’t grow up in Lagos. I grew up in Port-Harcourt but I had been visiting Lagos since 1996. My mother stays in Lagos and my father stays in Abuja. My father has two wives and I am the only child of my mother.
TNE: Why did you go into spa business?
I never believed that I would do this job. Something happened and I just decided to give it a try. Then I started learning. After I finished the training I became a professional and began training other people. So far, I have trained five people. They are four ladies and one guy.
TNE: How did you venture into the business?
It was in 2015 after the presidential election.
TNE cuts in: Before we go further, what were you doing before this job?
I was working in a hotel as a receptionist. Then I was still pushing my acting career. I still want to become an established actor. I have featured in one movie so far. I haven’t given up on that dream yet. Maybe God may bless me through this business. I thought of using the massage therapy job to earn a living. I saw a board with an advert saying a massage therapist is needed. I didn’t know anything about it. I just walked into the company at number 65 Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere. The lady I met at the reception asked me if I was a massage therapist and I lied and said yes. She then asked me how many types of massages are there. I couldn’t even mention one. She now took me to the boss and we discussed. They took me to a room for practicals.
TNE: Practical with a woman?
Yes. I tried my best. They knew that I didn’t know anything about the job but I had the passion for it and was willing to learn. She said you know what, we will train you. After the training, she employed me and I worked for her. After one year, I left Surulere to be on my own. I started doing it on my own.
TNE: Do you have an office?
No, I don’t. I do home service or we meet in hotels.
TNE: You massage men or women?
It is a choice. It is either male massage therapist or a female one. Most men prefer women, while most women prefer men. When you are doing waxing, massaging or body scrub, the person will be naked.
TNE: What does the waxing entail?
Waxing is to remove hair from the armpit and the bikini line.
TNE: Bikini line? Is that not the vagina? Would the person be naked?
Of course! You will see everything. The client will ask you to do everything. Since I have been doing this job, no lady has said it is only the bikini line. They always want me to remove hair from the vagina.
The wax looks like gum that is blocked. You melt it with electric pot. It has many colours. There is no after effect because there is this oil called waxing oil you use after the waxing. There is a paper like sand paper, strong. You cut it the way you want. If the hair is too much you can’t wax it. You need to cut it with scissors for it to be low then you wax. You apply a little powder from the part you want to start. Where I apply the powder, I will put the waxing gum there. You will test it first to know if it is warm because if it is too hot, it will injure the person. You spread it there and press it. You make sure the paper gums with the wax. Once you see it has stuck, you pull it out. It is painful, especially for first timers. Those who are used to it don’t feel the pain anymore.

TNE: What is your clientele like?
Most of my clients are rich women. Those who are managing their lives also want it but they usually complain that they don’t have the money for it.

TNE: How much does a full massage cost?
There are different packages, with different amounts. For instance, couples delight, waxing massage, facials, N6, 000 for promo. But normally massage costs N8,000..
TNE cuts in: Without the waxing?
It depends. There are different types of massage. We have hot stone massage, aromatherapy massage, Swedish massage. About seven of them. We don’t accept asthma patients and someone who just had surgery on any part of the body.
TNE: Why?
It is risky. At a point anything can happen. We are very careful. We don’t want trouble.
After the job, we will give you a card to fill where you will put your details there. Some people like to do it once in a month, while some every week. It depends on their choices. Ladies love massage more than men. I have worked on almost 100 women.
TNE: You said you train people. Do some of your students get carried away?
Anyone without self control can’t do this job. After my training, my first job was with a lady I met at National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, because I went there to share fliers. She called me and asked me if I was David who gave her a flier, I said yes. She paid for N10, 000 packages for facials, body scrub and massage.
On that day, the woman was naked. I asked myself if that was how I would continue. I thought and almost left the room. I changed my mind after summoning courage. Let me say this, some ladies can be funny. When you are massaging them and they are wet, you will think they want you to have sex with them but you may be wrong. There are those who will want sex but you just have to use your brain.
TNE: Have you ever been tempted by a client?
Yes. So many of them. I usually tell them I don’t mix business with pleasure. If they want to have anything to do with me, it shouldn’t be at the work place. We could meet somewhere else. But some are very stubborn. They persist. To be honest, I have had sex once with a client while doing the job.
It is only you and the customer that would be in the room. It is all about self control. If you both have sex, no one would know. Some men go to meet masseurs for sex. Likewise women. They meet male masseurs for sex. Going back to my first experience, I did the job after summoning courage. From there I continued and became popular. I saw one of my customers in the same Church I worship last week Sunday. She was like Dave! What are you doing here? I said I have been coming here for the past 11 years. When she called me last year, she said Bukky gave me your number. I didn’t want to ask which Bukky because I have many customers. She wants to open a spa and she wants me to teach her. I get calls from all over the country. People who want me to train them. I am so good that I am better than the woman that trained me today. Whenever she wanted to advertise she must put my name and phone number.
TNE: Do you have married women as clients?
Sure! I have married women as clients. They behave like every other lady that comes. They get tempted and also demand for sex too. Some of them ask for sex and I play my role as a professional. I don’t fall into that kind of temptation because some people might be testing you just to spoil your career.
Some women look for trouble. When starting the massage I usually cover their buttocks with a towel. Some would say they aren’t comfortable with the towel on and they would remove it. There was a lady who wanted to do body scrub. She removed all her clothes and was stark naked. I said wear your pant. But she said she didn’t need it.
After massaging the back and it’s time to massage the front, I would face another way and she was meant to use the towel to cover her private part. Some will insist they want to be naked. They don’t mind showing you their pubic part. One lady, even shouted at me saying “is it by force to cover me with towel?”
Another day, I was massaging a lady and ended at the laps close to the buttocks. She now asked me “you no dey massage bombom?” I said no we do but I have to take permission from you. I can’t just touch you anyhow.
Some people have been begging me to teach them so that they can be having fun with ladies. I asked them if they wanted to go into it for the pleasure alone. Some people have messed themselves up in this business.
There is a bed roll which is disposable. We spread it on the bed because most ladies get wet when we massage them. Instead of the bed getting stained, the bed roll gets stained.
I did waxing and body scrub for one lady. That scrub is like sand. They have to have their bath before you massage them. This particular lady said I must follow her to the bathroom and wash her body for her and that she had paid me.
TNE: Are you married? Are you into a relationship?
I am not married and I am not into any relationship. I have dated someone though. She was my customer. We are no longer together.
TNE: Why are you no longer with her? Is it because of the job you do?
No, it had nothing to do with this job. She never had problem with the job. She usually asked me how work was whenever we met. We are no longer dating but we are still friends. She is a student of University of Lagos. She is studying Law. When she was fat and was trying to be a model, I told her that she needed to lose weight for her modeling career. I helped her slim down with a machine called G5.
