The Senator representing Lagos West, Olamilekan Yayi, narrowly escaped abduction on Wednesday at the National Assembly when some suspected thugs invaded the Senate chamber and snatched the mace.

The mace is the symbol of authority of the Legislature.

Speaking on his narrow escape, the media aide to the senator, Mr. Kayode Odunaro said it took the grace of God for Adeola to escape.

He said he was bundled into a waiting Sports Utility Vehicle with which they escaped with the mace.

According to Odunaro, the person with the mace was sitting in the front while they pushed him into the back seat.

However, when they drove to the House of Representatives part of the National Assembly complex, the senator forced the door open and jumped down.

Odunaro said his principal sustained injury in the process.

His words:  “Apparently the senator was kidnapped by the people that took away the mace.

”It was at the point of arrival of the senator at the entrance to the National Assembly that the group of men forcefully took him in their jeep and the jeep made its way out of the National Assembly.

”On getting to the House of Representatives motor park, the senator had to force the door open and jumped out. In the process he sustained an injury on his head.

”Apparently it would have been a kidnap attempt may be we would have been talking about ransom now.

”I was a witness. They took the mace inside the same Range Rover Jeep and that was exactly the Range Rover Jeep that brought Sen. Omo-Agege.

”I was waiting for my senator. You know the practice. The man that took the mace sat in front and pushed the senator to the back.”

Senator Adeola confirmed the incident on his twitter page.

His tweets:  “Thank God I escaped kidnapping by unknown thugs who invaded the @nassnigeria today.

“I was pushed into one of the SUVs parked in front of the White House wing and attempt was made to drive me out of National Assembly Complex.

“I escaped by forcing the car door open and jumping out.

“I’m very well and receiving treatment now.”
