It is no longer news that the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly Elections was riddled with a lot of unrest and violence in many areas.

It is also not news that the security agents whose responsibility it was to safeguard lives and property on the said day not only abdicated, but in some cases, became the merchants of death.

In all of the violence and chaos of February 23, however, one young Nigerian stood out for his selfless act of charity, love and heroism.

The youth corp member, who has since been identified as Adaji Muhammad aka Bobby, serving in Community Secondary School, Bonny Island, Rivers State, was caught on camera carrying a female corp member identified as Bukola Fakorede, who had fainted after they were tear gassed at the polling centre where they served as Ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The Nigerian Army was said to have deployed the tear gas to disperse angry youths from the polling unit.

As the picture hit Twitter, Nigerians were touched and decided to reward him.

A Twitter user with the handle @MrEnebechi whose name is Enebechi Macaulay was the first person to offer cash gift to him. He was also the person who took the trouble to identify the young man and make known his identity.

The tweet that started it all: @MrEnebechi

“Please who can connect me to this guy? He is the one serving this nation not those men standing in borrowed uniforms.

Please RT so he can see it.

Dear brother, if you ever contact me, your 3 months salary is in my pocket & I am waiting to hand it to you.”

The above tweet literally opened the floodgates and the rewards started pouring in.

@Idomaboy147

“The 4th/5th month is in my pocket. Pls let me know whenever he gets across.”

@IszybeeTheFirst

“Please give him something better than a three months salary.

Give him a job immediately he finishes his service year so he doesn’t end up unemployed.”

@Nathaniel_ijeh

“I am adding 3months salary to that.”

Other Twitter users suggested that the girl and even the photographer should not be left out. Bukola’s account number was then made public.

Twitter user with the handle @alphamale202 said; “OK I’m adding 6 months salary and new camera for the photographer.”

And they did redeem their promises. Adaji Muhammad sent a video to Mr Enebechi thanking all those who have reached out to him. Bukola was also present with him and thanked those who have reached out to her too.

This indeed is the true Nigerian spirit. It is the spirit that should be encouraged and applauded.
