The Ekiti Police Command has released the preliminary report on the shooting of former House of Representatives member, Opeyemi Bamidele and five other persons on Friday.
The shooting, the police said, was an accidental discharge.
Bamidele and the others were attending the reception organised for the All Progressives Congress’ governorship candidate in the Ekiti State election, Kayode Fayemi, when they were shot.
The gunman was said to have directed his gun at Fayemi, but missed his target.
In its report which was released on Saturday, the police disclosed that the gunman is an anti-riot policeman who was on illegal duty.

He was said to have been hired by a politician.
The politician and the policeman were said to have been arrested but the identities of the two have not been disclosed.
The policeman, according to the report released by police spokesman, Mr. Caleb Chukwuemeka, was attached to 20 PMF, Ikeja, Lagos State where he was posted to guard a bank.
“The policeman came on illegal duty to Ekiti State.
”A politician, who conspired and removed the said policeman from where he was posted by his Squadron Commander and came to Ado-Ekiti with him for an unofficial reasons has also been arrested.
“The police said findings had revealed that what happened was a case of accidental discharge on the part of a mobile police officer,’’ the police spokesman said.
He added: “On Friday, 1st June, 2018 at about 1700 hours, the policeman accidentally shot Opeyemi Bamidele and one other, but he has been arrested….
“The victims of his accidental discharge are currently responding to treatment at the hospital, while the injured policeman is equally responding to treatment in the protective custody.”
