Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, wife of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and former governor of Akwa Ibom State is a year older today, June 9.
Eka Esit Mbom, as she is fondly called, is a woman that is much loved by her husband, Senator Godswill Akpabio and people of Akwa Ibom state.
The reason for such undying love, is not far-fetched. She has always stood by her husband through thick and thin. She has also loved the people of Akwa Ibom state wholeheartedly as her own.
As the First Lady of Akwa Ibom for eight years, she contributed immensely to the success of her husband and development of the state.
Through her pet project, Family Life Enhancement Programme (FLEP), she touched countless lives, put smiles on many faces and food on tables of the less privileged that otherwise would not have had any.
Mrs. Akpabio, a woman who firmly believes that God blesses people for them to bless others used her position as the First Lady of Akwa Ibom to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged and women and for years to come they will never forget her love and generosity to them.
Students, widows, the homeless, traders, the sick, among others, benefited immensely from her various charitable endeavours; and she did all without making much noise about them.
Through FLEP, Mrs. Akpabio built hundred of houses, furnished and donated them to indigent widows across the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State. She supported more than 1,500 families with business skills, equipment and financial grants.

Mrs. Akpabio mentored more than 2,000 girls, gave scholarships to scores of indigent students, sponsored many persons with challenging medical conditions for treatment abroad, repatriated and rehabilitated hundreds of former child labourers and street kids, cared for and supported more than 4,000 indigent multiple birth families and gave various assistance to the physically-challenged. Little wonder, therefore, that she is known as “Eka Esit Mbom.”
In 2013, Mrs. Akpabio received Nigeria’s Most Supportive First Lady Award by The Sun Newspaper for her contributions to her husband’s success.
Indeed Unoma, a beautiful woman both inside and outside, is a-one in a million woman, worthy of being celebrated and emulated. She is an inspiration to thousands of people all over the world.
No wonder her husband never fails to celebrate her on her birthday.
To celebrate her birthday today, Sen. Akpabio took to his Twitter handle to pen a short and heart warming message to his dear wife.
He wrote: “Happy birthday to the Angel that lights up my life. It is the anniversary of your birth, and my life will have no meaning without you in it.
“Happy birthday my jewel of inestimable value, may the grace of God continue to dwell in your life today and Forever. Amen.”
Indeed, she deserves to be celebrated. Happy birthday, the Mother Theresa of our world!
