The United States Mission to Nigeria on Monday celebrated Dr. Onyema Ogbuagu, for his role in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Ogbuagu was part of the team that helped Pfizer pharmaceutical, to develop the vaccine.
In a tweet on Monday, the US mission wrote, “Nigerians contribute to the world in so many ways. Our hats off to Dr Onyema Ogbuagu at Yale who helped develop a COVID-19 vaccine.”
The Mission also described Ogbuagu’s contributions in the development of the vaccine as “incredible.”
Ogbuagu graduated from the University of Calabar in 2003 and interred at the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, before migrating to the US.

He is currently an associate professor of medicine in the clinician-educator track and director of the HIV clinical trials programme of the Yale AIDS programme at the Yale School of Medicine.
He is also Yale principal investigator on multiple investigational therapeutic and preventative clinical trials for COVID-19, including remdesivir (now FDA approved), leronlimab and remdesivir and tocilizumab combination therapy, as well as the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine trial.
Both his parents are professors.
His father, Prof. Chibuzo Ogbuagu, was a former Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, while his mother, Prof. Stella Ogbuagu is a professor of sociology
