An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court on Tuesday dissolved a 13-year-old marriage between Ifaola Busayo and her husband Azeez Busayo.
News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the marriage was dissolved on grounds of threat to the life of Ifaola and constant fights with dangerous weapons.
The court also ruled that Azeez had no regard for his wife’s family; and lacked care for her and their only child.
Ifaola, 32, who resides at Olujoda, along Ikere road, Ado-Ekiti, told the court that she met her husband 13 years ago and since then they had been cohabiting.
She, however, accused her husband of threatening her life by constantly beating her and injuring her with a knife anytime he was drunk.
The plaintiff said her husband had no respect for her parents and often insulted her even in the presence of his friends whenever he had the opportunity.
The mother of one said anytime she caught her husband with a lady and confronted him, he would beat her for daring him.
She also told the court that there was a time, her husband’s lover came to their home to threaten her to leave him or she would die.
Ifaola said she reported the matter to her parents, who sent for him, but he refused to honour the invitation; and when her father went to meet him, he insulted him and even had the man arrested.
Besides these, she said that he had not been paying their child’s school fees, adding that her father had been the one paying.

She urged the court to dissolve the marriage and award her the custody of their six years old daughter.
But the respondent, 34-year-old Azeez, who resides at Aba Oyinbo, Oke- Ureje along Poly Road, denied some of the allegations levelled against him.
Azeez claimed that there was no marriage between him and Ifaola and that they never lived together.
He, however, admitted that they fought almost all the time, and that during their last fight, the plaintiff had attacked his penis which led to him being hospitalised.
He also admitted arresting her father because he accused him wrongly in the presence of his friends by calling him a thief and an armed robber.
He consented to the dissolution of the union.
The president of the court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, in granting their prayers, observed that the marriage had broken down irretrievably, and consequently dissolved the union.
Akomolede ruled that the custody of the child be awarded to the mother, and ordered Azeez to pay N5,000 monthly to the plaintiff as feeding allowance.
She further ordered that Azeez be responsible for the child’s education.
Akomolede granted Azeez access to the child, but on notification to Ifaola.
