A Professor of Public Law & Legal Philosophy, Dejo Olowu has advocated that convicted former governors should be made to do menial jobs in public places wearing prison uniform.
According to him, the shame of such public display would deter others from stealing from public coffers.
Prof. Olowu who teaches at the Walter Sisulu University, South Africa, spoke in Lagos on Wednesday at the launch of a report on Nigeria’s anti-corruption social norm.
The report was written by the Socio-economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP).
Lamenting the enormity of the devastation caused by corruption in Nigeria, Prof. Olowu insisted that it was not enough to sentence such corrupt leaders to prison.

“These days, they (convicted governors) are convicted and sentenced and it makes big headlines.
“After that, nobody hears anything or sees them. They are treated like royalty in prison and the next time they are seen, they are in babaringa.
“Let them be made to sweep streets, clean public toilets. Let the people see them doing menial jobs in prison uniform and video clips and pictures of them be taken and kept for posterity.”
Prof. Olowu also noted that every Nigeria was a point of connection in the circle of corruption insisting that the circle must be broken.
He called on Nigerians to eschew corruption noting that if the circle of corruption was not broken, it would destroy the nation.
