Delta State government has pledged to pick the bill of those injured in the collapse of St. Paul Catholic Church building, Ugolo, Adagbrasa in Okpe local government area of the state.
One person was killed in the incident while several others were injured.
The government made the promise to pick the bills when the state Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, visited the scene.
His words: “While we pledge to pay the cost of treatment for the injured, people must ensure they seek necessary approvals before construction of buildings particularly public structures to avoid incidences such as this.”
Augoye explained that the 100 years old church building collapsed in during efforts to rebuild and expand the old structure.
Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, had earlier sent his condolence in a message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Charles Aniagwu.
“This is indeed a very sad and unfortunate incident.
“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I commiserate with the family of the deceased and those injured.
“It is our prayer that the soul of the deceased will rest in peace, and that the injured will experience quick recovery.
“Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the people of Ugolo in Okpe Kingdom over this,” Okowa said.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commiserated with the victims of the building collapse.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja on Sunday, the party said the incident was traumatic.
“Indeed, our hearts and prayers go out to the bereaved, the wounded, all members of St Paul’s Ugolo and the Catholic Church at large, over this sad event.
“We urge the parishioners to be strong and not allow the incident to wane their faith and confidence in God,” PDP said.
