Would you sacrifice a university education for the sake of a relationship?
On Tuesday Davido broke the internet when pictures of him registering for his Youth Service surfaced. The National Youth Service is a one-year mandatory programme for all Nigerian graduates at home and abroad. If you ever want to work in the Nigerian civil service or run for office, your youth service certificate will be required.
The hit maker graduated from Babcock University with a degree in Music two years back and finally decided to register for the programme this year. Anyone who follows Nigerian pop culture will know of his girlfriend Chioma and will also know that she dropped out of Babcock University recently. While she didn’t state her reason, the general consensus is that it’s because of her high profile relationship.

In the light of Davido starting his service year, Twitter user @vasheti_ who has Raging feminist , Medical doctor on her twitter bio has raised a question concerning the matter. “Choima has dropped out of school to follow Davido up and down meanwhile he’s going for NYSC! If things don’t work out tomorrow and she starts blaming him, low lives on Twitter will call her a bitter feminist. Meanwhile, feminists are asking her to go back and finish school now”
She goes on to question why her parents would allow her to drop out of school and advises that no amount of money should blind their eyes.

In addition, she insinuates that Nigerian women will do anything for money and that’s why they are anti-feminism as the idea of using their own money to take care of themselves is beyond them. “Feminists know better than to drop out of university to be following a man up and down,” she says.
The tweets conclude by saying “Funny how it’s mostly men saying that it’s ok for her not to finish school, definitely not a surprised. What things do you guys not want women to have apart from being poorly educated?”
After her comments, several others have joined the train to state how they feel about the situation.
@nkem_n “People tend to forget that feminism is about having the right to choose your own path. If you want to be a stay at home wife, it’s ok. If you want to be independent, it’s also ok. It’s obviously not a good choice to leave school and follow a man but it’s her choice and her life. Feminism is about freedom from the path society enforces on you.”
@saussyme “I would have said to this woman (@vasheti ) to shut up but she’s kinda right. This mumu left her life to follow man up and down. One day, he will stop loving her and all the goodies will stop. What do you do then? In life, you have to be selfish and that means looking after you first. All these ones na temporary. There’s nothing a woman cannot achieve on her own. We’ve seen the likes of Alakija and Linda Ikeji.”

@koded198 “Nigerians, learn to mind your business. Busy bodies! I will choose following Davido up and down any day, anytime, to this worthless certificates I have gathered that is just wasting away under my bed now for decades. Who school help?”
@vvn_tony “Stop nagging Chioma. I would drop out of school too. If they break up, she will sell the Porsche and start a business. Uni kill you there!”
@anthonia_e.p “Who said she dropped out tho? Didn’t Nina spend 3 months in big brother house out of a 4 month semester and she still graduated. Lol. Nigerian education and their degree is just a joke. Chioma will graduate, just wait and see.”
Assuming Choima dropped out of school because of her relationship, is that a wise option? How much should women give up for the sake of a relationship? Do you think she will regret that decision?
It’s worthy to note that with Davido’s help she signed a deal worth millions to have her cooking show but would that count as her ‘having her own money’?
Would you give up a university education for a man you’re dating? As a man, would you ask that of your girl or allow her to do it even if it was her decision? Sound off in the comments section and let us know if you agree with Vasheti or not.
