The South-East chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party says the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has failed to deliver on his key promises which include- improving security, strengthening the economy and tackling corruption.

The Zonal Publicity Secretary of the South-East PDP, Elochukwu Okeke, said this in a statement on Friday titled, ‘South-East Demonstrates Their Trust in PDP to Get Nigeria Working Again.’

According to the PDP, under Buhari, Nigeria has become the poorest nation in the world, one of the most terrorised countries and has the highest number of out of school children.

The opposition party further stated that Nigeria had dropped on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index and has thus failed to tackle corruption.

The statement read in part, “The government failed Nigerians even in the three areas – security, economy and fight against corruption – which it consented to, as their promised focus.

“Boko Haram is ranked the 4th most dangerous terrorist organisation in the world. The World Internal Security and Police Index ranks the Nigeria Police Force as the worst police department in the world.

“Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world with over 87 million people living on less than $1.9 a day. Nigeria is the country with the greatest number of people living in extreme poverty.

“Taking over Nigeria with a GDP growth rate of over 6 per cent and the 3rd fastest growing economy in the world (between 2013 and early 2015), the APC government delivered the worst GDP growth rate of -1.62 per cent since the return to democracy in 1999, driving the economy to recession in the process.”

The opposition party said the All Progressives Congress had failed to make a dollar equal to the naira as was promised during the run-up to the 2015 polls.

The PDP thanked the South-East for its unrelenting trust in the party.

It said the statement attributed to stakeholders of the APC in the South-East during their meeting in Owerri on Wednesday that they would win the next governorship election in Anambra election was laughable.

The opposition party also praised its leaders in Ebonyi State for remaining steadfast even after its Governor, Dave Umahi, defected to the APC.

It said the refusal of key stakeholders to join Umahi had made the governor a lone ranger.

The statement further read, “Recent happenings in Ebonyi state, perhaps underscore the status of PDP as the party of choice of South-East Nigeria. The defection of Governor David Umahi brought to the fore the absolute trust the people of Ebonyi have in PDP.

“Onlookers expected that Ebonyi people would join Governor Umahi in the APC. However, by the sheer goodwill of who-is-who in Ebonyi including former Senate President, Pius Anyim; Senator Sam Egwu and all members of the National Assembly, Ebonyi people demonstrated in clear terms that Ebonyi is PDP and PDP is Ebonyi, as all notable indigenes of Ebonyi state remained in PDP leaving Governor Umahi as a lone ranger in the APC.”
