President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday approved the appointment of Kayode Opeifa as the substantive Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).
Opeifa, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, replaces Ben Iloanusi, who had been acting in the position since the exit of Fidet Okhiria on October 18, 2024, after completing his second four-year tenure.

He gained prominence during his tenure as Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation under Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration.

Naija News understands that Opeifa introduced policies that modernized Lagos’ transportation system, improving traffic management and positioning the state as a model for urban transport across Africa.

Building on his Lagos achievements, Opeifa was appointed as the Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Opeifa was also a key figure in addressing Lagos’ notorious Apapa gridlock. As Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT), he worked alongside former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who chaired the team, to unbundle traffic congestion at Lagos ports.

The team was tasked with finding sustainable solutions to one of the nation’s most pressing transportation challenges, earning Opeifa national recognition for his expertise in the sector.

By assuming leadership of the NRC, Opeifa takes on a critical role in advancing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure and services.
