Benue Ukum LG Plans Biggest Yam Show To Boost Production, Export

As a way to boost yam production and exportation, the Executive Chairman, Ukum Local Government Council, Mr. Stevie Ayua, has said he will organize the biggest yam show in Benue history to showcase Ukum yam potentials to Nigeria and the whole world at large.

The Chairman stated this on Monday, while inaugurating officials of Association of Yam Shade Owners and Yam Sellers, Zaki Biam International Market.

Mr. Ayua said that he will set up the organizing committee for the event next week to organize the yam show.

According to him, the show will be a variety show programme that will encourage Ukum people to farm more and cultivate yams in greater scale inorder to boost economic activities of the local government.

He also explained that the show will attract investors from across the country and elsewhere for yam export which will be beneficial for his people.

Mr. Ayua stated that the 3-day intended programme will give awards in three categories of the biggest yams, the smoothest and the longest yams including other considerations.

He stated further that with the programme, Ukum Local Government would have been properly shown to the whole world that the local government is still on the top rank of yam production in Nigeria.

In his remark, the chairman of the occasion, Mr. David Sev-Av, said that the association must endeavour to work in tandem with the development initiatives and goals of the current leadership of the local government stressing that unless the association work in harmony with the authorities of the local government, it’s plans of development will remain a mirage.

Earlier, the guest speaker, Mr James Akishi, thanked the Chairman and leaders of the association for finding common ground to work together and also solicited for the Chairman’s kind intervention in the welfare of the association.

In his remark, the outgoing chairman, Mr. John Anda, expressed gratitude for the opportunity given him to serve the association, and pledged his continued support of the new leadership.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Mr. James Najime, promised to justify the mandate freely given him by members of the association with commitment to serve his members.

According to the Special Assistant on Media to the Chairman, Timothy Vihimga, highlight of the event included the commissioning of a drainage constructed by the outgoing leadership headed by Mr. Anda.
