Benue Guber: INEC Declares Ortom Winner

The independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the incumbent governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom winner of the state governorship election.

Returning officer for the election, Sebastian Maimako announced the result at the INEC headquarters in Makurdi around 3:55pm on Sunday.

Samuel Ortom of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, polled a total of 434,473 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Emmanuel Jime who polled 345,155 votes.

Recall that INEC had on March 9, 2019, declared the governorship election in the state inconclusive saying the cancelled votes of 121,022, were higher than the margin of 81,554, between the two leading candidates in the election.

The supplementary election held in 204 polling units across 22 Local Government Areas, LGAs of the state on Saturday.

Declaring the winner, Professor Maimako said “I Prof. Sebastian Maimako hereby certify that I was the returning officer of Benue governorship election held on the 23rd of March, 2019, that the election was held and that Emmanuel Jime of the APC scored 345,155 and Samuel Ortom of PDP scored 434,473 votes.

“That Samuel Ortom having satisfied the requirements of the law and having scored the highest votes is hereby declared winner of this election”.
