Benue State Government has commenced the immunization of Women of Child bearing age to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.
The immunization which is being done in 18 out of the 23 local governments of the state commenced on Wednesday to end Monday next week.
Executive Secretary Benue State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Bem Ageda announced this while speaking to journalists in Makurdi.
Dr. Ageda said tetanus kills children in high numbers hence the need to immunize the mothers to strengthen and protect the children’s inherent antibodies.

He explained that women of 15 to 49 years old were eligible.
According to him, Agatu, Gwer West, Logo, Oju and Ohimini, were excluded from the immunization due to good coverage in previous immunization exercises
The Executive Secretary explained that the last schedule of tetanus immunization was in 2018 adding that women were to be given schedules to cover two years after which they would have life time immunity against tetanus.
Dr. Ageda appealed to traditional and religious leaders to encourage women to go out for vaccination for effective coverage saying mobile teams were on ground for the immunization which is free.
