The attack on the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, by policemen on Wednesday is an abuse of the constitution of the country, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has said.

The action of the police, he added, was also a threat to democracy.

Recall that Governor Emmanuel is the national coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party’s election team in Ekiti State.

Speaking with journalists at the Government House in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, he called on Nigerians to condemn the action of the police in its entirety.

He said the condemnation was necessary because it affected every Nigerian and there was the need to sustain the country’s democracy.

“It is not about Fayose or Ekiti State, it is about everyone of us; if it can happen to Fayose, it means it can happen to anybody. We should not just look at Fayose today, we should not just look at Ekiti State, let us look at Nigeria. So what is happening?”

He said elections would come and go, but Nigeria would remain.

“Let us not do something that will really bring down this country,” he said.

The governor called on the electorate in Ekiti State not to be intimidated.

He also advised security agencies to be civil in their approach to issues.

“This cannot happen in any civilised society where a sitting Governor with full immunity can be so abused publicly. It is a shame for the whole country, it is a shame to all of us,” he added.

Describing his party, PDP, as a law abiding group, Emmanuel said it would not join issues with anybody.

According to him, all that was important to the party was winning the election in a free and fair contest.
