Alleged corruption: IGP refuses to answer Senate’s questions

Mum was the word from the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, as he appeared before the Senate ad-hoc committee probing allegation of corruption against him.

Senator Misau who had been engaged in allegations and counter allegations with the IGP brought his case to the Senate for consideration, hence the ad-hoc committee.

But appearing before the committee on Wednesday after he was threatened that a warrant of arrest would be issued against him, Idris refused to answer the questions he was asked.

He said rather, he appeared before the committee as a sign of respect for the Senate.

His words:  “I will not answer any question…

“I decided to appear out of the respect of the Senate and rule of law.”

His refusal to answer the questions was hinged on the fact that the case was already in court.

It was the same position that had earlier been stated by his counsel, Alex Iziyon.

The lawyers said it would be subjudice to speak on the matter.

“Because we don’t have anything to hide, we have responded to the allegations paragraph by paragraph,” Iziyon said, adding that “We know you have rules here and we are asking you to look at it.”

The chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Francis Alimekhena, said the committee would study the documents presented by the IGP and invite him at another time.

The hearing was adjourned indefinitely.
