The Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, on Monday condemned the invasion of the palace of Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, during the installation of some chiefs.
In a statement by his Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy, Yomi Layinka, the governor said he would not tolerate the return of violence to the state.
He said he had directed security agencies to probe the matter and arrest the culprits and bring them to book.
The statement reads: “The attention of the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has been drawn to the alleged act of brigandage during a ceremony at the palace of the Olubadan, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, today (on Monday).
“The governor condemns the said act in its entirety and has directed security agencies to ensure that the masterminds are swiftly arrested, interrogated and brought to justice.
“The governor has vowed not to brook anyone or group of people desirous of bringing back the regime of violence and brigandage to the state.
“He wishes to reiterate his commitment to the security and protection of lives and properties of all citizens of Oyo State, which he has laboured hard to restore and maintain in the last six years.”
Early in the day, former Secretary to the State Government, Sharrafaden Ali, escaped death in Ibadan as gunmen invaded the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.
The men shot into the air and directly shot at the back door of the black SUV car which Ali rode.
The invasion of the area created pandemonium with everyone running for cover.
Some journalists who were at the palace to cover the installation of four local chiefs (baales) by Oba Adetunji also sustained injuries.
Appalled by the incident, one of the journalists, Ademola Babalola described it as a great escape.
He wrote on his facebook page: “Another great escape by whisker! Gunmen @ Palace. It can only be God. Saw death LIVE!!! This life. Job hazard.
