The Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged the Church to remain exemplary in its activities and pray fervently to enable the country overcome its challenges.

The governor made the call on Thursday at the inauguration of the newly elected officers of the Delta State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and dedication of the first phase of the state CAN secretariat complex in Asaba.

Said Okowa:  “We thank God for the smooth transition witnessed in CAN; there was no complaints and this is clear evidence that the church must live by example.  We hope politicians will have something to learn from CAN as we believe the church will continue to set standards for the society.

“The church has a lot of roles to play in our country, Nigeria. In the last few years, there have been challenges in the country and I must call on the church to pray. With prayer, there will be solutions to the challenges of the country.  It is time for the church to go on its knees.  There is nothing that God cannot do.”

Governor Okowa stated that his administration was committed to delivering dividends of democracy to the people and urged parents to ensure proper upbringing for their children.

The newly sworn in Chairman of CAN in the state, Senior Apostle Sylvanus Okorote, in an address, thanked different Christian organisations for giving him and members of his executive committee to serve.

“We promise to serve this ecumenical body to the best of our ability even as we ask for your cooperation, support and guidance,” he said.

He commended Governor Okowa for his development projects, especially in the construction of drainages to check the flooding of towns and cities in the state.

The new executive committee was inaugurated by the Chairman, CAN, South South zone, Archbishop God-Do-Well Avwomakpa.

Award of excellence was presented to Governor Okowa at the occasion.
