In his bid to find a lasting solution to the killings by suspected herdsmen in some states of the federation, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has offered to accommodate herdsmen.

He has given an invitation to them to come and carry out their business in his state, boasting that there is enough room for as many of them as may want to come.

Ganduje gave the invitation during a cattle vaccination event held on Sunday.

Over one million cattle and other small animals in Garum Malam Local Government Area were vaccinated at the event.

His words: “I am inviting herdsmen from all parts of Nigeria to relocate to Kano because we have enough facilities to accommodate them.

“We have grazing lands in Rogo, Gaya, Kura, Tudun Wada, Ungogo and other reserved places where facilities are in place to accommodate the herdsmen and their cattle.”

The governor argued that it was pointless killing over grazing when there was enough land to do that in his state.

“These killings must stop. We cannot afford to continue to witness these senseless killings in the name of Fulani herdsmen and farmers clash over lack of grazing land while we have a place like the Falgore Game Reserve underutilised.”

He stressed that the reserved area had been designed to contain schools, human and animal clinics, markets, recreational centres and other social amenities that could give the herdsmen enough comfort to take care of their animals and do their business without hindrance.

He also said his government was willing to partner with the federal government to modernise the grazing area.

Killings in some states of the federation in recent time have been blamed on herdsmen who encroach on farms.

The development led to the anti-grazing law being enacted in some states.

The enactment of the law is said to have heightened the tension in Benue State leading to the extermination of about 73 people between January 1 and 2, 2018 by suspected herdsmen.

The crisis had since provoked a condemnation of the government over the poor security state of the nation.

This is because despite the deployment of security operatives to affected places, the suspected herdsmen still carry out attacks unchecked.
