Akwa Ibom: Gunmen attack commissioner’s home, kill three

Three persons were shot dead by some gunmen who attacked the country home of Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Local Government  and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Udo Ekpenyong.

His country home is located at Ukanafun Local Government, Akwa Ibom State.

Ukanafun has become notorious for criminal activities perpetrated by suspected cult members lately.

It was gathered that a younger sister of the commissioner was among those killed.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesman in the state,  Bala Elkana, said the gunmen came on a motorcycle firing indiscriminately.

According to him, apart from the woman shot at the residence of the commissioner, two other persons were shot in another part of the area.

While assuring that the commissioner was safe, he explained that the commissioner was possibly not at home during the incident.

He said already, the police were investigating the matter and the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, had visited the scene of the incident.

Following the incident, the police in a statement announced the ban on the use of motorcycles in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The statement which was signed by Mr. Elkana, reads in part:  “This measure becomes necessary to tackle the rising tide of violent crimes, especially murder and kidnapping in the affected local government areas mainly perpetrated with motorcycles.”
