The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Tuesday said that body cameras are already deployed and would be use by all its patrol teams during the festive season.
Mr. Samuel Ochi, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sector Commander, disclosed this in Abuja during the 2021 Operation Zero Show of Readiness/Simulation Exercise.
According to him, the campaign is a way of ensuring safety on the highways.
Ochi explained that the essence of the body camera was to show live situation of what transpired on the highway and the Corps’ field operations.
This, according to him, will improve transparency and accountability in the activities of the Corps.
“The body cameras is for safety and transparency. So that we don’t have a situation whereby our personnel are too tough on people using the roads.
“And at the same time, those that violate traffic rules will realise that they are being monitored through the body cameras,” he said.
On the essence of the simulation exercise, Ochi said it was to show the readiness of the command in ensuring safety on the highway and enabling everybody to move from one point to the other safely.
“That is what we have demonstrated today in collaboration with other agencies of government.
“We have equipment to respond to all emergencies on the highway and as much as possible we are appealing to Nigerians to show restraint, show some level of understanding.
“There is going to be massive deployment of our officers during this period, don’t have any fear.
“Our essence of being on the road is not to arrest, it is to ensure that our roads are free, the roads are smooth and everybody arrive at their destination safely,” he said.
Mr. Jonah Agwu, Assistant Corp Marshall, FCT Command, appealed to road users to take it easy while on the highway.
“This is one of the celebrations we have yearly. So we are pleading with you, speed kills, beware of that, beware of distractive driving.
“Most times when there are crashes and you asked what is the toll free number. They tell you, I have forgotten.
“The emergency toll free number is 122. Call it so that the ambulance service people, the Zebra, will quickly respond.
“But remember, road crashes are someone’s fault, do not let that fault be yours,” Agu said.
The Assistant Corp Marshall who could not hide his excitement with the level of synergy with other security agencies, called for its sustainability.
On his part, Mr. Robert Dominic, the Commander, Directory of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in-charge of Area 1 Abuja, charged motorists to desist from drinking before driving.

He noted that most accidents occur as a result of poor vehicle maintenance and over speedy.
He advised road users to ensure they check their tyres and anything that could lead to road crashes before leaving their houses.
The campaign with the theme, ‘Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Quality Road Experience’, was aimed at strengthening Inter-Agency collaboration.
The exercise had representives from the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence Corps, Directory of Road Traffic Service and the National Emergency Management Board. (NAN)
