The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) said 1,856 corps members were successfully registered into the Federal Capital Territory permanent orientation camp in Kubwa.

Alhaji Suleman Abdul, FCT NYSC coordinator, disclosed this at the swearing in ceremony of the 2021 Batch A Stream II corps members into the orientation course on Friday in Abuja.

Abdul said that the number comprised of 585 male and 1,271 female corps members and they have all settled into the camp.

He also said that about 500 corps members that were supposed to serve in FCT have been dislodged to Kogi and Niger due to inadequate capacity of the camp.

“If the capacity of the camp had been adequate, there will not have been any need to send them there,’’ he said.

On challenges of the camp, Abdul said that inadequate water supply experienced during the last orientation course has been addressed.

He said the NYSC has provided surface tanks filled with water, readily available for use any time there was shortage and called on the FCT administration to help in addressing the situations.

The coordinator further said that the corps members would be engaged in effective leadership skills and trainings which would include; professional lectures, Military drills, sports, and Man`O’War.

According to him, the foundation of a successful service year is in the orientation course and urges all members to avail themselves to experts who will engage them professionally in training.

He noted that NYSC was now more gender-friendly and has long stopped exempting pregnant women from taking part in the orientation course activities.

He said: “we are gender friendly, there was a time when a woman in her first trimester had a problem in the camp and we rushed her to the nearest hospital for proper attention’’.(NAN)
