Civil servants in Asaba, Delta State capital, have expressed joy over the decision of the state government to reverse the suspension of salary payment in line with the N30,000 minimum wage.
Aluka Daniel, a worker in the House of Assembly Commission, expressed joy over the development as he recalled difficulties that came with suspension of payment of salaries in line with the new minimum wage, which affected workers from grade level 7 to 17.
Also, Mrs. Joy Okeh, a civil servant in Oshimili South Local Government Area, lauded the government’s quick action as it would reduce the imminent effect of increase in tariff on civil servants.
“This is the best time this could have happened because it would be difficult for us to have coped with the increase in fuel and electricity tariff,” she asserted.

Having been criticised for accepting the decision of the government to reduce salary in July, chairman of Delta State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Goodluck Oforburuku, thanked workers for their patience and understanding.
He disclosed that the payment of the new minimum wage for levels 7 to 17 would be lifted with effect in the September salary of workers.
However, he expressed displeasure over the increase in fuel and electricity tariff, saying that the action was wrong, especially at this period when people had been finding it difficult to survive due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his effective leadership, people-oriented policies and programmes, particularly for being workers friendly.
