An Uselu Mobile Court in Benin on Saturday sentenced five persons for violating the directive on face masks and curfew imposed by the Edo Government to contain COVID-19 in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the state government had directed compulsory wearing of face masks in public places and imposed dusk-to-dawn curfew, beginning from 7p.m. to 6a.m. daily.
The state Prosecuting Counsel, Mr. Agbokhaode Ayo, said that four persons violated the curfew, while one violated the face mask wearing order.
Ayo added that they were apprehended at Uwasota and Uselu Market axis, and they pleaded liable to the offence.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Mutairu Oare, ordered the violators to carry out community services for two days, in line with the state government’s non-custodial regulation.
The services include clearing of drains and shrubs, picking of trash, grass cutting and compulsory community sensitisation, among others.
Oare said the offenders would be handled by correctional officers during the punishment period.
The chief magistrate, however, gave the convicts an option to pay a fine of N4,000, for curfew violation and N2000 for mask wearing order violation.
