Nigeria’s women basketball team have qualified for the Quarterfinal of the African Women Basketball Championship in Bamako, Mali.
Popularly known as D’Tigress, the women’s national basketball team mostly comprising American-based Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) players and college students won their 4th game in a row in Group B to qualify for the quarterfinals.
The group qualifier game against Guinea tipped off at about 12:45 pm, saw a dominant display from the Nigerian Tigresses from start to finish.
At the end of the second quarter, Nigeria had recorded 48 points, outplaying the Guineans who trailed by just 12 points.
Dallas Wings WNBA Draft pick and D’Tigress player, Evelyn Akhator was the shining star of the game hitting 16 points personally at the end of the second quarter.
The end of the 3rd quarter saw Nigeria further increase their dominance with an 82-20 score line, while star player, Ms. Akhator scoring 22 points, two more than the entire Guinean team had recorded.
The Nigerian team went on to win the game, hitting 106 to Guinea’s 33 points at the end of the fourth and final quarter.
According to organizers of the championship in Mali, Nigeria hit the highest point difference ever recorded in the history of the tournament ever.
The Nigerian team will now play Senegal on Wednesday in the quarter final of the competition.
