March 8 is set aside yearly by the United Nations as International Women’s Day, IWD, all over the world. On this day, leaders all over are expected to show concerns and commitment to the challenges facing women with the aim of finding solutions to them.
The year 2022, according to the UN, is pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change, and environmental and disaster risk reduction, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. The organization said without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remains beyond our reach.
It said this year’s IWD observance is in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response, and to honour their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.
In celebrating this years women’s day, lawmakers in Benue State have pledged their commitments to sustain support for women-friendly legislations to ameliorate the plight of women in the State.
Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Titus Uba who described International women’s Day as a day for leaders at all levels to rededicate to the cause of women, assured that the 9th Benue Assembly under his watch will continue to make laws that would address the challenges of women.
Mr. Uba while noting that the representation of women in government leaves a lot to be desired, enthused that the 9th Benue Assembly has a history of placing female members in strategic committees.

“That uncommon gesture is just one step towards demonstrating that indeed, the 9th Benue Assembly under his watch doesn’t subscribe to gender disparity.”
He said he acknowledges the strength in not just the women who are members but the women folk and called for more women participation in politics to enable them contribute meaningfully to the development of the state and nation.
The Speaker lauded the gender sensitivity of the Ortom-led administration in the State as demonstrated in the appointment of many women in strategic positions in government and for considering women in elective positions both at local Government and state levels.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Wuese Orshi, the State Assembly wishes Benue, and indeed, all Nigerian women a happy International women’s Day celebration.
Also, member representing Konshisha State Constituency, Mr. Cephas Dyako, said the defining roles played by women in ensuring the collective existence and the sustainability of the human race has earned them a special place of pride, honour and admiration in the annals of history.
He expressed confidence that the womenfolk can do a lot more if set in the right condition of environment, supported by the needed resources and set on a leveraging platform of exploits.
“This is why, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day #BreakTheBias is apt and wouldn’t have come at any other better time.
“As the world commemorates this day to celebrate #InternationalWomen’sDay, I am particularly thrilled to celebrate our women across different walks of life, sung or unsung, with a marked distinction.
“As a legislator, I shall continue to work in providing pieces of legislation and offer support to legislative framework that seeks to propel women to better and higher frontiers of life,” Dyako said.
