At least four people have been killed and 18 reportedly injured following two separate improvised explosive device (IED) explosions in Gujba LGA of Yobe state.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the first explosion occurred on Friday morning along the Goniri–Buni Yadi road near Bultaram village, when a commercial pickup van carrying traders to the weekly Buni Yadi market, ran over an IED.
Several passengers were critically injured, with three confirmed dead upon arrival at the Yobe state specialist hospital in Damaturu.
Makama reported that 18 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were admitted for treatment.
A few hours later, a second explosion occurred in the same area when an unidentified cyclist accidentally stepped on another IED.
The publication said the cyclist was rushed to Buni Yadi general hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
However, Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesperson for the Yobe police command, told TheCable that two people were injured in the incidents.
He described Bultaram village as a known hotspot for terrorist attacks, adding that members of the Boko Haram terrorist group are suspected to have planted the explosives.
Security and emergency response teams, including explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) units and local vigilante groups, have been deployed to the area to conduct clearance operations and prevent further casualties.
Abdulkarim said investigation is ongoing to uncover the details of the explosions, adding that the insurgents responsible are going to face the full wrath of the law.
