Strange Explosion Rocks Akure, Residential Houses, School, Churches, Destroyed

Residents of Akure were greeted with a strange explosion early Saturday morning, which destroyed over 50 residential buildings, school, churches.

The cause of the explosion is not known though many believe it was a bomb blast.

The explosion according to reports cut off the ever busy Akure /Owo road while many people were said to be injured.

The incident which happened less than a kilometre to Akure Airport, affected many residents of Eleyowo community, destroying completely a church and a school in the area.

Individuals who lived within the church premises were said to be wounded while some were rescued by the people of the community.

The school with boarding facilities was destroyed beyond repair with roofs of all the buildings blown off.

The spot at which the explosion happened, cut off the road, hindering vehicular movement.

Meanwhile, the state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, said he had been briefed on the incident and would soon visit the scene.

In a tweet on the state’s official handle, he urged residents to remain calm.

“I’ve been briefed by security agencies in the state concerning the loud blast that was heard in Akure. I will be at the scene to assess on the advise of heads of our security agencies.

“I ask that all citizens remain calm as we ascertain details of the incidence.”
