Former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, on Saturday lamented the quality of political leadership in Nigeria, describing it as among the lowest.
Obi, who was the guest of honour at the Maiden Annual Global Reunion of the Egbu Girls Old Girls Association (EGOGA), noted that there was a need to change the political leadership of the country for the nation to move forward.
Speaking at the Reunion lecture which took place at school premises in Egbu, Imo State, he also lamented the quality of education in the country, tying it to the quality of leadership.
According to him, the education sector was in crisis with Nigeria having 51 percent literacy rate, one of the lowest in the world.
The Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general elections pointed out that the government was not investing enough in education in the country.
According to him, in the last 10 years, Nigeria has spent only a paltry N4.4 trillion on education.
Obi further pointed out that the crisis in Nigeria was because the leaders have failed to invest in education.
“The crisis or problem in Nigeria is because we didn’t invest in education. The government is still not investing enough.
“The greatest asset of any nation is its people and investing in the people is the quickest way to development.”
Commending the old girls for remembering their Alma Mater, Obi assured that he would be part of the change they have purposed to bring to the school.
He admonished Nigerians to stop praying for God to intervene in Nigeria’s situation saying that God had already done so.
“Nigerians should stop praying for God to intervene in the country. God has already done so, that’s why we are still here.
“Nigerians should pray that God should touch the hearts of those in leadership to use government money for public good.”
Obi also admonished those who are blessed to be more caring about the good of others.
