Chief Executive, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has warned against the stereotyping of all Nigerians, following the release of a list by the United States authorities indicting 80 persons, most of whom are Nigerians for various crimes.

Recall that the US federal prosecutors on Thursday, unsealed dozens of indictments after 17 people were arrested and taken into custody in Los Angeles and other places in the United States.

A statement from the Justice Department announcing the names had read in part:
“A 252-count federal grand jury indictment unsealed today charges 80 defendants, most of whom are Nigerian nationals, with participating in a massive conspiracy to steal millions of dollars through a variety of fraud schemes and launder the funds through a Los Angeles-based money laundering network.

“The indictment was unsealed after law enforcement authorities this morning arrested 14 defendants across the United States, with 11 of those arrests taking place in the Los Angeles region. Two defendants were already in federal custody on other charges, and one was arrested earlier this week. The remaining defendants are believed to be abroad, with most of them located in Nigeria.

“The fraudsters targeted victims in the United States and across the globe, including individuals, small and large businesses, and law firms. Some of the victims of the conspiracy lost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fraud schemes, and many were elderly.”

However, in a statement by Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa on Friday, she said the actions of a few Nigerians involved in criminal activities did not represent the majority.

According to her also, an accusation did not necessarily mean guilt.

The NIDCOM Chief Executive, said that it was expected that all the suspects would be given fair and speedy trial.

The statement, however, advised those indicted to turn themselves in to the American authorities to clear their names, insisting that failure to do so could result in the Nigerian government extraditing them if relevant international treaties between both governments were invoked.
