The remains of Maj. Gen. Idris Alkali (rtd.) have been buried.

He was laid to rest on Saturday by the Nigerian Army at the military cemetery in the Gudu District of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Led by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, senior officers and men of the army, offered prayers at the cemetery before lowering Alkali’s body into the grave.

He was also given full military honours.

Gen. Alkali’s body was recovered from an abandoned well in Guchwet village, Shen District of Plateau State on Wednesday. He had gone missing on September 3 on his way to Bauchi from Abuja.

His corpse was found following a search-and-rescue operation by a team of military personnel.

The funeral prayer, was led by the Chief Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Dr Kabir Mohammad who commended the Nigerian Army for their committed effort which led to the recovery of the body of the deceased described as a “national hero”.

Mohammed described the situation surrounding Alkali’s death as “very unfortunate,” adding, “However, we thank Allah that his body had been recovered. Even though it took weeks to trace the whereabouts of the late Alkali’s corpse, we thank Allah; we thank the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army for the dedication to find his body, so that he can be buried according to Islamic rites.”

Among those present at the emotion laden ceremony were former Military Administrator of Lagos, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.), and a former Minister of Works and Housing, Alhaji Sanusi Dagash among muslims from within and outside the Federal Capital Territory.
