Plateau killings: Police tighten security with special team, helicopters

Security has been tightened in Plateau State with the deployment of a special team by the police.

The special team is made up of Intelligence Response Team, IRT; Special Tactical Squad, STS; three Police Mobile Force units and five Armored Personnel Carriers, APCs.

Also two helicopters are already in the state for aerial surveillance.

The steps taken were at the instance of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

It would be recalled that no fewer than 86 persons were killed by suspected herdsmen in some communities in Plateau State at the weekend.

According to a statement issued by the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, the Deputy Inspector General, Operations, has moved to Plateau to oversee the execution of the security measures.

The statement reads:  “Two police aerial surveillance helicopters, five Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), three Police Mobile Force units (PMF); two Counter Terrorism Cells (CTC ) and police intelligence unit and conventional police personnel from other states have been deployed to the affected areas in Plateau State.

“The police aerial surveillance helicopters and other components of the intervention force are already in the state. Their arrival in the state has restored peace and prevented further attacks in the affected areas.

“The IGP has directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of IGP Monitoring Unit to lead the Police Special investigation team to the affected areas and other flash points in Plateau State.

“The investigation team comprises the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), the Special Tactical Squad (STS) and the Technical Platforms. The team is to carry out a thorough and discreet investigation into the killings and promptly apprehend those responsible.
