Florida shooting survivors return to class, retailer curbs gun sales

The survivors of a deadly shooting at a Florida High School earlier this month returned to schoolon Wednesday as one of the country’s largest sports retailers announced it would end the sale of semi-automatic weapons.

The Valentine’s Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 14 students and three educators dead had galvanised proponents of gun control and placed federal lawmakers under pressure to take action.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the country’s largest sporting retailers, said that it would end the sale of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines and stop selling guns to people under the age of 21, regardless of state laws.

“At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform,’’ the retailer said on Twitter.

He suggested a list of legal measures including a ban on assault-style weapons, raising the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21 and a database of those banned from owning guns.

Though U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed several limited gun control measures to appease the student activists, he has stopped short of expressing support for the above-named reforms.

His main suggestion has been arming teachers with concealed weapons, a proposal endorsed by the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA).
