Monday Ubani, activist and former second vice president of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has disagreed with the claim by some Nigerians that the country became a failed state under President Muhammadu Buhari alone.
The public affairs analyst in an interview said that all the former leaders of the country had contributed in one way or the other to make the nation a failed state, stressing that there was never a time in the history of the country that the citizens had really enjoyed.
The activist, however, noted that the country has become more divided than ever before under Buhari’s administration, saying that the president had failed to consider the issue of federal character in his appointments.
Ubani called on the leadership to as a matter of urgency begin the restructuring of the country so that states would begin to control their resources in the spirit of true federalism.

He said, “Nigeria did not start to fail under Buhari. Nigeria failed under all previous governments. There is no time that the citizens of the country have woken up in the morning to say, ‘God bless Nigeria’.
“The government’s policies are not tailored towards the people. Since 1966 till date, we have never had any government at the federal level that had come in as a government of the people. Under the military till now, failure has been part of the government in this country.”
Ubani maintained that no government had taken the people as priority aside from talking about it, stressing, “They would only say it, but not in practice.
“I belong to nobody, I am for nobody’. these are all lip service. They belong to their ethnic and religious groups and have not considered the interest of the generality of the citizens.”
