Some gunmen on Wednesday invaded the residence of late Moshood Abiola, the popularly acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, in Ikeja, Lagos.

The spokesman of the Lagos police command, Bala Elkana, confirmed the development in a phone conversation with TheCable.

He said the suspects have been arrested while investigation has commenced.

“We have suspects in custody. We have commenced investigation,” he said.

Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, also known as M. K. O. Abiola, ran for the presidency in 1993.

However, the election which was generally believed to be the freest and fairest in Nigeria and which many believed was won by Abiola, was annulled.

He was a businessman, publisher, politician and aristocrat of the Egba clan.

He held the traditional title of Aare Ona Kankafo XIV of Yorubaland.
