The U.S. accounts for about a third of all confirmed cases, with nearly 610,000 infections, and more than 26,000 the data showed.

The world-wide death toll has passed 128,000, a figure that experts say likely understates the extent of the pandemic.

The economic toll of social distancing, lockdowns, and travel restrictions was also in sharp focus Wednesday, as U.S. retail sales posted their largest drop on record last month and Germany, Europe’s largest economy, said it expected to remain in recession at least to midyear.

The head of the European Commission predicted a “very long” exit from the health crisis as global stocks fell and oil prices approached an 18-year low.
