The joint sitting is one of the activities to mark the silver jubilee of the Akwa Ibom State of Assembly.

At a media briefing on Monday to herald activities of the weeklong event which has as its theme, “A Milestone of Legislative Excellence” the Deputy House Leader, Hon. Ime Okon, said the sitting would be reminder of the common historical tie the two houses shared together.

He said:  “The joint sitting of the house will be a significant reminder of the historical ties which the two states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River are proud to share.”

Okon who is also the House Committee Chairman on Information, said the joint sitting which commences at 11 am at the floor of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly will be aired live on the state’s Broadcasting Corporation TV service Channel 45.

Activities lined up for the celebration include a public lecture to be delivered by Senator Effiong Bob on the topic, “The role of the legislature in the development of Akwa Ibom state in the past 25 years.”

Others include the launching of the Akwa Ibonm Legislative Internship Programme, presentation of the midterm report of the sixth assembly, a visit to orphanage home and a gala night.

Giving reasons for the celebration, Okon said “There is every reason to celebrate as we clock 25.

The week-long celebration will grant us the opportunity to both glance back and leap forward.

“We will be looking back at our contributions to the development of Akwa Ibom State in the last 25 years, while recharging ourselves for the development challenges ahead.”

The lawmaker said all the Assemblies – from the first to the sixth – have made significant milestones in the development of the state.

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was proclaimed in 1992 by the then executive governor of the state, Obong Akpan Isemin, with the inauguration of a 48- member parliament as the first assembly of the state.

The state assembly has produced 11 speakers from six assemblies with more than 170 sons and daughters privileged to serve as members since the first assembly was inaugurated in 1992.
