Cases of domestic violence, which is also known as domestic abuse, intimate partner violence or abuse are increasing each passing day. Several factors are said to be responsible for the rise and one of such is when one partner feels the need to control and dominate the other.
Other factors are inability to control anger, low self-esteem, extreme jealousy, and overindulgence in alcohol, or when they feel inferior to their partners based on educational or socioeconomic background.
But the question is what will make you hit your partner?
Elizabeth Patrick, Teacher: “I am of the opinion that a man who beats up his girlfriend or wife is weak. No one’s action should cause you to react in a negative manner. One needs to control himself or herself no matter the provocation. Notwithstanding, we ladies have our own shortcomings so are the guys.”
Anonymous: “In my opinion, women bring the violence upon themselves. Some women torment and traumatize men mentally leaving them more emotionally beaten up than the women they beat physically. Some women are headstrong and can traumatize their men to the extent that they don’t know when they hit in anger. A man might have experienced some things growing up, but that is where they need women for support. Women should help these men control their anger.”
Ademola Kudus, Businessman: “In my opinion, both male and female are to be blame for domestic violence. In the case of a guy, when he is tired of the relationship he finds every means of cutting ties with the lady. With little provocation, he results to violence. For women, when they don’t get the desired attention they need, they nag the man and in the process it can make the man to hit her.”
Mfon Bekeh, Film Editor: “There are misconceptions about guys who beat-up their partners. It is said that there’s no smoke without fire, so a guy will not hit a girl for nothing. They don’t beat up people at work or the drivers on the road who cut into their lanes. But at home, the story is different because there’s an overwhelming need to monitor the behavior of their partners — how she dresses, where she goes, and whom she talks to. In the process, things could go out of hand. But there’s need for moderation though.”
Tessy Eno, Apprentice: “Domestic violence has increased because women can no longer take nonsense from their husbands. A woman struggles to make ends meet and provides for the family whereas the man is there and wants to feel on top of the world because of tradition. So, my opinion is that both men and women are responsible for domestic violence.”

Chika Okoro, Stylist: Men are the cause of domestic violence. “For example, a woman works hard to support her husband and in a situation whereby the woman gives her husband the children school fees to pay and the man ends up spending the money without paying and the children are sent out of school or she struggles to buy a car for the family use and the man is busy gallivanting with other ladies with that car. What do you expect from her? Do you think she will not fight back when an opportunity presents itself?
In conclusion, partners are encouraged to build relationships and marriages based on love, respect and understanding. They should shun things that can lead to domestic violence.
