Wakili: Senate suspends plenary

The Senate suspended sitting on Tuesday following the death of the senator representing Bauchi South, Ali Wakili.

The legislative house suspended its sitting at about 11.08 following a motion to that effect.

The motions for a minute silence for the deceased and the suspension of sitting were moved by the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan.

The two motions were adopted and the sitting suspended.

Senate President reminded the legislators of the valedictory service scheduled for Wednesday.

Ali Wakili, 58, died on Saturday and his remains interred the same day in Abuja.

Bauchi State government declared a three-day mourning period over his death.

He was described as a vibrant legislator who was greatly committed to duty.

Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State also suspended all state duties to mourn, while directing the reduction, by two hours, the working time, during the mourning period.

President Muhammadu Buhari also sent a high level government delegation to Bauchi State to commiserate with the people and family of Wakili.

The president who sent the delegation on Sunday had earlier sent a condolence message and made personal telephone calls to the wives of the deceased.

Many have described the late senator as one of the president’s strongest supporters.
